What Is Astrology, and How Does It Work?
Most people meet astrology through a one line daily horoscope, and understandably conclude it is just entertainment. But that horoscope is the shallow end of a very deep, very old practice. Let us start from the beginning.
Astrology is the study of how the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at a given moment correspond to life on Earth. At its heart is the birth chart: a snapshot of the sky at the exact time and place you were born.
How a birth chart works
Imagine freezing the sky at your first breath. Where was the Moon? Which sign was rising on the horizon? Where did each planet sit? A birth chart records all of this as a wheel of twelve signs and twelve houses, with the planets placed inside it.
An astrologer reads the chart by looking at three things together: the planets (what is happening), the signs they occupy (how it expresses), and the houses they fall in (which area of life it touches). The art is in weaving these into a coherent picture.
Why your birthday sign is only the start
The sign everyone knows, your Sun sign, is just one placement out of many. It is why generic horoscopes feel hit or miss: they speak to one twelfth of the sky and ignore the rest of your chart. A real reading considers your rising sign, your Moon, and every planet, not the Sun alone.
Where Vedic astrology fits in
Astrology developed in many cultures, including Mesopotamia, Greece, India, and China. The Indian tradition, called Jyotisha or Vedic astrology, is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems. It differs from Western astrology in two big ways: it uses the sidereal zodiac (tied to the actual stars), and it places the Moon, not the Sun, at the center.
It also has a detailed system of timing called dasha, which maps out which themes of your chart are active at which times of your life. That focus on timing is one of the tradition's great strengths.
Is astrology science?
It is important to be honest here. Astrology is not a physical science, and it does not claim to override your free will. Think of it less as prediction and more as a language: a symbolic map for reflecting on character, timing, and meaning.
Used that way, as a mirror rather than a fortune telling machine, it can be genuinely illuminating. At Aura, that is exactly the spirit in which we build your chart: grounded, honest, and rooted in the classical tradition.
