You've probably heard people talk about their "big three" — their Sun, Moon, and rising sign. Together these three points sketch the outline of your whole birth chart. But most people have never been told what they actually mean. Let's fix that.

Your rising sign (Ascendant / Lagna)

Your rising sign — the Ascendant, or Lagna in Sanskrit — is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born. It is the frame of your entire chart: it sets where all your houses begin.

Symbolically, the rising sign is your outward self — your personality on first meeting, your body and physical vitality, and the lens through which you approach the world. It's the "you" people encounter before they know you. Because it depends on the exact time and place of birth, your rising sign is the one part of your big three that genuinely needs an accurate birth time.

Your Moon sign

Your Moon sign is your inner world — your emotions, instincts, and what you need to feel safe. It's the private self that comes out when you're at home and unguarded. In Vedic astrology the Moon is the single most important placement in the chart (we wrote a whole post on why).
