The 12 Houses of Your Birth Chart, Explained

6 min read

A birth chart has three moving parts: planets, signs, and houses. Planets are what is happening, signs are how it happens, and houses are where it happens — the actual areas of your life. In Vedic astrology the houses are called bhavas, and there are twelve of them, each governing a distinct department of life.

Your rising sign decides where the first house begins, and the rest follow in order around the chart. Here's a quick tour.

Houses 1–4: self and foundations

1st house (Tanu) — you: body, appearance, temperament, the overall direction of your life. 2nd house (Dhana) — wealth, savings, family, speech, and what you value. 3rd house (Sahaja) — courage, effort, skills, siblings, and communication. 4th house (Sukha) — home, mother, inner security, land, and emotional foundations.

Houses 5–8: expression and change

5th house (Putra) — creativity, romance, children, intelligence, and past-life merit. 6th house (Ripu) — health, daily work, obstacles, debts, and the discipline to overcome them. 7th house (Kalatra) — marriage, partnership, and one-to-one relationships. 8th house (Randhra) — transformation, shared resources, the hidden, and deep change.

Houses 9–12: meaning and release

9th house (Dharma) — fortune, higher learning, philosophy, teachers, father, and your sense of purpose. 10th house (Karma) — career, public reputation, and your contribution to the world. 11th house (Labha) — gains, income, friendships, and aspirations. 12th house (Vyaya) — loss, expenditure, retreat, foreign lands, and spiritual liberation (moksha).

How houses come alive

A house on its own is just a topic. It comes alive through the planets sitting in it, the sign on it, and the condition of that sign's ruler. A strong, well-placed ruler of your 10th house, for example, supports a strong career — but only a full reading, weighing dignity, aspects, and timing, tells the real story.
