The 12 Zodiac Signs, Explained

7 min read

The zodiac is a belt of twelve signs that the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to travel through. Each sign spans 30 degrees of that circle and carries its own character. Here is the whole cast, in order.

The fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Fire signs are active, warm, and driven. Aries is the pioneer, direct and courageous. Leo is the performer, generous and proud. Sagittarius is the seeker, restless for meaning and adventure.

The earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth signs are grounded, practical, and enduring. Taurus is steady and sensual, a builder of comfort. Virgo is precise and helpful, devoted to craft. Capricorn is disciplined and ambitious, patient with the long climb.

The air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Air signs are social, curious, and idea driven. Gemini is quick and communicative. Libra is relational and fair minded, drawn to balance and beauty. Aquarius is independent and inventive, loyal to a bigger vision.

The water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Water signs are emotional, intuitive, and deep. Cancer is nurturing and protective. Scorpio is intense and transformative. Pisces is gentle and imaginative, tuned to the unseen.

A note on the dates

You may know the familiar Western dates (Aries about March 21 to April 19, and so on). Those follow the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so the sign boundaries sit roughly 24 degrees earlier, and your Vedic Sun sign may land in the previous sign. We explain exactly why in our post on Western versus sidereal astrology.

And remember: your Sun sign is only one piece. Your Moon and rising sign matter just as much, often more. Create your chart at Aura to see all three.
