What Are Nakshatras? The 27 Lunar Mansions Explained

The twelve signs are only the first layer of the Vedic sky. Beneath them lies an older, finer division: the 27 nakshatras, or lunar mansions. If the signs are twelve neighborhoods, the nakshatras are the individual streets — and they carry much of the real detail in a Vedic reading.

A zodiac measured by the Moon

The nakshatras divide the same 360° circle into 27 equal segments of about 13°20′ each. The number 27 is no accident: the Moon takes roughly 27 days to travel the whole zodiac, so it spends about one day in each nakshatra. This is a zodiac built around the Moon's own rhythm — fitting, given how central the Moon is to Vedic astrology.

Your Janma Nakshatra — your birth star

The nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth is your Janma Nakshatra, or birth star. Traditionally it's used to describe temperament and instinct at a finer grain than the Moon sign alone, and it's central to compatibility matching and the naming customs of many Indian families.
