The Three Levels of Journaling: Record, Reflect, Reframe

3 min read

There is no universal model called the three levels of journaling. Aura uses record, reflect, and reframe as a practical path from event to choice.

People often ask about the three levels of journaling as though there is one official answer. There is not. Different teachers use different stages. A useful framework is record, reflect, and reframe.

You can stop at any level. Not every day requires a deep interpretation or a new perspective.

Level one: record

Record what happened. Include time, place, people, actions, and direct words when they matter. Keep this level close to observable reality.

Recording preserves detail and reduces the way current emotion edits memory.

Level two: reflect

Ask how the event affected you. What did you feel? What did you assume? What need, value, fear, or memory became active? Reflection moves beneath the event without claiming that your first interpretation is final.

Level three: reframe

Reframing does not mean making the situation positive. It means finding a wider frame. What else may be true? What belongs to you? What is outside your control? What response would align with your values?

A reframe can still conclude that something was harmful or unacceptable. The wider frame simply restores choice.

One event through all three levels

Record: My friend cancelled two hours before we were meant to meet.

Reflect: I felt unimportant and remembered other times when plans changed without care.

Reframe: The cancellation was inconsiderate, but it is not proof that I am unimportant. I can ask for clearer notice and decide how much flexibility I want to offer next time.

Where astrology belongs

Astrology fits best as a reflection prompt between levels two and three. A chart theme may help you name a recurring concern, but it should not replace the record or dictate the reframe. Aura keeps choice at the centre.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reach level three every time?

No. Sometimes recording is enough. Reframing too quickly can become emotional bypassing.

Is reframing the same as positive thinking?

No. Reframing widens the view while preserving facts and valid emotion. Positive thinking may pressure you to find a bright side.

Can I use the levels in one entry?

Yes, or you can return later. Distance often improves reflection and reframing.
